Mark Strong
The lovely and British Mark Strong has a special place in my heart for
his portrayal of the Moral-Free Colonel Brand alongside fellow Hot Bad
Guy Sean Bean in Sharpe's Mission. Colonel
Brand believed that wounded soldiers should be left behind to die,
gypsies were the scum of the earth, and did I mention he was a French
spy? But, my, my, my, did he fill out his uniform well. He and his
men, Brand's Boys (and let's not delve into those homoerotic overtones
today, all right?), pretty much spent their time raping and pillaging
across the French countryside and doing a little treason on the side.
Meanwhile, he very nearly charmed Sharpe's wife, the Twit Jane, right
out of her knickers. That's a Hot Bad Guy we can get behind. Of
course, he and Sharpe don't get along all that well (no pun intended)
and Our Villain meets a tragic end. But thus, it is nearly always so.
Mr. Strong also starred in the BBC miniseries The Long Firm as gangster Harry Starks with a fantastic fashion sense. We are eagerly awaiting the release of the first four episodes on Region One DVD. Come on, England. We're waiting...
