Gary Sinise
The Always Lovely Gary Sinise has made a career out of playing good guys. I know, I know,
I'm shocked as well, but we can't have Our Favorite Bad Guys if there weren't occasionally
good guys to thwart. He has played some Grey Area Guys, notably George Wallace in the TNT
movie, George Wallace, in which he was
portrayed as a victim of circumstantial politics, rather than an out and out racist bastard.
But time and time again, Mr. Sinise's characters tend to be rough-edged, rough-tongued guys
with a heart of gold.
Thankfully, Mr. Sinise abandoned his usual persona to play Detective Jimmy Shaker in Ransom. In that film, Mr. Sinise, a New York City policeman, masterminded the kidnapping of fellow Hot Bad Guy Mel Gibson's son, played by Nick Nolte's kid. (Ah, Hollywood.) In exchange for the return of his son, Detective Shaker demands $2 million or he'll kill said son (which frankly he intends to do anyway). Wackiness ensues. When Detective Shaker's plans are foiled, he responds in True Bad Guy Fashion. He turns on his cohorts, killing not one, not two, but three of his personal minions, including his girlfriend, and fakes that he found the kid, thus setting himself up to receive a $4 million reward and public adulation. When his nefarious plot is uncovered through timely urination, Detective Shaker takes out two fellow members of the NYPD before meeting his bloody end at the hands of a plate glass window. (How many Bad Guys are undone because they don't realize that broken glass is sharp? See Tony Goldwyn. Clearly there needs to be some kind of Villain Training Course on How Common Household Things Can Kill You, Thus Destroying Your Evil Plot. Someone needs to look into this.) Detective Shaker was also indirectly responsible for the brutal slaying of Donnie Wahlberg.
Through use of Cool Gadgetry, Meaningless References to The Time Machine, and Nearly Successful Plotting, Detective Shaker is a Bad Guy Par Excellence. Keep up the Good Work, Mr. Sinise.

we'll never be able to look at a policeman the same way again
