Jonathan Rhys-Meyers
No-one on the planet, and I really mean it, can pout
and seethe like Jonathan. The man is an Artisan of
Seething. Whether he seethes with anger or with pouty
lust, he's dangerous to the senses. In the Gormenghast
miniseries produced by the BBC, Jonathan plays
Steerpike, a kitchen boy with arrogant aspirations to
mingle with the inbred noble family that runs the
joint. In short time, he insinuates himself into the
affections of various family members and hangers-on,
and, yes, into the darker places in our hearts. When
he sets out with murderous intent, we go right along
with him, mesmerized at the end of his snake-charming
flute.
For other good examples of pouty/seething/writhing Jonathan, see Velvet Goldmine, in which he plays an androgynous rock star with the hots for Ewan McGregor's Iggy Pop-like character, and the recent sleeper hit, Bend it Like Beckham, in which he stretches his acting chops to behave relatively normally, nary a writhe or full-on seethe in sight though he does throw in a few broody glances for good measure. Notable too is the fact that his eyes are a gorgeous bright blue, all the better seen when his hair is cut short -- the better to show off those razor-sharp cheekbones, too.
