Jack Nicholson
When even Leonard Maltin describes you as having a "shark's grin," you
know you're cool. In fact, Cool doesn't even begin to describe Jack
Nicholson. If you look up Cool in the dictionary, his picture is right
there. No, really. Go ahead and look. We'll wait.... See? We told
you.
Aside from his Eminent Coolness, Mr. Nicholson has played a number of Glorious Villains, usually ones just this side of Too Creepy to Joke About. As Jack Torrance in the film version Stephen King's Creepy Hotel Novel The Shining, Mr. Nicholson takes crazy to a whole new level. Not that he didn't have some help, mind. I mean, was that not the Evilest Big Wheels you've ever seen? Shudder. Creepy. Now we understand why Joey from Friends had to put that book in the freezer. And whose idea was it to give someone as unstable as Jack access to an AXE of all things?
Mr. Nicholson again played a Villain, this time one that was pretty much As Bad As It Gets as Daryl Van Horne (read: The Devil) in The Witches of Eastwick. Oh, it started out all fun and games and frightening sex scenes with Michelle Pfeiffer, Susan Sarandon and Cher, but will you really ever look at cherries the same way again?
In A Few Good Men, Mr. Nicholson played Bad Ass Marine Colonel Nathan R. Jessup, making "you can't handle the truth" the "show me the money" of the age. And he was pretty scary. I think even Tom Cruise was a little scared of him. Then, Mr. Nicholson played Will Randall in Wolf, a werewolf movie so amazingly mediocre that to this day it retains its crown as The Only Movie I Have Ever Walked Out On. It was awful, but he was a werewolf, so I thought I'd give him a nod.
Well done, Jack. Here's hoping you have tons more movies in you.
