Ian McShane
Ian McShane, best known for playing Al Swearengen on the
HBO series
Deadwood, has a line
in his IMDB bio that says "frequently plays cold-eyed calculating
villains." Hell yes, he does. His portrayal of the villainous
saloon and whore house owner is a tour de force, a veritable clinic
for any actor who wants to know how to play a Bad Guy. He even has
idiotic minions. Would he set a rival whorehouse on fire to get rid
of the competition? Of course not. He has people for that kind of
thing.
He has all the trappings of a classic movie villain - racist, sexist, anti-semitic, rude to the physically challenged, snarky to his underlings - except we get to see him every week on TV. Does his vileness repel us? Nay, surely it does not. It makes us wonder why he seems to wear the same undergarments every day. It makes us want to invite him on a trip to the bathhouse. It makes us want to appreciate his Gabriel Byrenesque qualities from closer up. Of course, Deadwood may be a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there...
