Sir Ian McKellen
My goodness, Ian McKellen has done a lot of Shakespeare. One of his
Villainous Big Screen Roles was as King Richard in the updated, World
War II Era version of Richard III. Sorry. It's just really
disconcerting to see a guy doing a role from Shakespeare and still be
smoking. Anyway, that role is just one among many of the Bad Guys that
Mr. McKellen (or Sir Ian) has taken on over the years. He played a Former
Nazi (and when you need a Good Villain, it doesn't get much better than
Nazis) in the amazingly mediocre screen version of Stephen King's Apt Pupil. Some kid tried to blackmail him, but it kind of backfired. And
with the way Sir Ian filled out that Nazi Uniform, he almost made the Hot
Bad Guy list for this movie as well. Plus, David Schwimmer got tormented
in this film, which is always good for some laughs.
Mr. McKellen's Cool Bad Guy Authority was cemented, however, with his portrayal of Eric "Magneto" Lehnsherr in X-Men and X2. He played the role of Magnetic Supervillian brilliantly. In the Original Film, Magneto demonstrated Excellent Extraneous Use of Power. And Kudos to developing a Psi-Resistant Helmet. Well done. Plus, he showed no qualms about the (attempted) murder of a teenager. The only real flaw in his plan was in putting his trust in the Brain Dead Sabertooth, a hirsute fellow with a personal grudge against Wolverine. Magneto would have gotten away with his plan, too, if it weren't for those meddling X Men. And in the Second X Men Movie, Mr. McKellen was again cast as Magneto, to brilliant effect. You could tell right away that hitting the Supervillian was Not A Good Plan. It really was only a matter of time before he escaped and donned Much More Flattering Attire. Magneto's tailored look with a clever cape should appear in any Supervillain's Guide to Looking Evil. I won't ruin his escape for you, if you haven't seen the movie, but DAMN. And you could just tell from that Look of Evil Glee that he'll be back in future films. And he didn't even need to say so, Arnold.
