The Making of a Hot Bad Guy:

The Hot Bad Process

You might think from just reading the lists that We Hot Bad Goddesses are always of One Mind when it comes to adding Guys to the Lists. That is not the case. The Making of a Hot (or Cool) Bad Guy is a long and complex process, one that could take anywhere from days to weeks to, in the case of Gary Sinise, months. Why is it so difficult, you may ask? Well, that, O Loyal Reader, is the question that We will delve into in this essay.

Step One in the process is identifying Guys who We haven't already included. Usually this happens while watching a movie, rather like a bolt of lightning. "What do you mean We forgot about him? How is that even possible?" While Our original Hot Bad Guy List was fairly extensive, We have constantly added names as We remember them or as We realize that some Hot Guy was a Bad Guy in such and such role.

Step Two occurs when the Goddess who has made the discovery of another Potential Hot Bad Guy suggests it to the Other Goddesses, almost always over email. "Hey Ladies, did you know that Johnny X was a Bad Guy in 'Big Blockbuster Movie'? I think he's pretty Hot. He was definitely Bad in that role. What say You?"

Step Three is where the real drama occurs. This is the discussion period that we have for each Nominated Guy. This period can range from either two follow-up emails, one from each of the Other Two Goddesses, agreeing and, occasionally expressing shock that none of us remembered Johnny X before, to long and sometimes violent and disjointed disagreements between the Three of Us. At some point, each of Us has threatened that They will no longer participate in the web site if so and so is added to the list. (Keanu Reeves, in particular, brought out abrupt and final disagreements on account of the fact that he is a horrifyingly bad actor, regardless of Hotness or Badness. Imagine how much better Much Ado About Nothing would be if Jason Isaacs played the role of Don John instead of Mr. Reeves. You see? Back to the story.) Since only two of Us need to think a particular Guy is Hot in a role in order for him to qualify for the lists, that's usually pretty easy. Even with Our occasionally disparate tastes in men, We can usually agree on a Gentleman's Hotness with no problem. It's whether or not a particular Guy is Bad that causes most of the difficulties. Again, We go back to the problem of characters in The Grey Areas between Good Guy and Bad Guy. While We do have the Badness rating which has been of invaluable help in clearing up disagreements, discussions whether a character is a Bad Guy, a Bad Boy or an Antihero have taken up more bandwidth than I can possibly say.

Some of the Guys on the Wanna Be List are there because they were nominated and We couldn't come to a consensus on their Badness. Discussion on them was eventually tabled and they were moved to the Wanna Be list until they played a more Definitively Evil Role. Nearly All the Guys We discuss eventually appear on at least one of Our lists. It is very rare that a Guy comes up for discussion and is then omitted completely. (Keanu Reeves is pretty much the only example I can come up with.)

Step Four is the Assigning of the Homage. Homage assignments usually go to the Goddess who nominated the Guy for the page in the first place. That is, unless one of the Other Goddesses has a Deep, Personal Attachment to the Guy in Question. Or has met him personally. (That seems to be Dandelion's forte. She knows Everyone.) The homages are written and sent to the Other Two Goddesses for edits and approval and then Moonstone adds them to the web site. Voila! Another Hot Bad Guy has been immortalized.
