Jude Law has, at last, been liberated from the Purgatory of the Wanna
Be Hot Bad Guy List and launched into the Pantheon of the True Hot
Bad Guys for his performance as Lord Alfred "Bosie" Douglas in
Wilde. Lord Alfred
plays Boyfriend Number Three of writer Oscar Wilde and, it seems,
Dear Oscar made a lousy decision. (Note: Boyfriend Number One was
played by Michael Sheen
[no relation to Those Other Sheens] and Boyfriend Number Two was
played by Wanna Be Hot Bad Guy Ioan
Gruffudd. Seems Mr. Wilde had a taste for the Welshmen.) Maybe
it was because he had a title, but Lord Alfred was a Spoiled Little
Boy. He cost Mr. Wilde God Knows how much money for houses and
presents. He took Oscar to a House of Ill Repute filled with Pretty
Boys, where he proceeded to mock him while getting busy with other
men. He had sex with other men in front of Oscar on a regular basis,
with no regard for Mr. Wilde's feelings. He was ridiculously cruel
and vindictive when Oscar was sick. But that's not the worst part.
Lord Alfred's father, the Marquis of Queensbury (yes, the guy who did the boxing rules), didn't like Oscar Wilde all that much. Something about corrupting his son. Anyway, the Marquis left a rude note for Mr. Wilde and Lord Alfred insisted that they take his father to court for libel. As a result, Oscar Wilde was sentenced to two years hard labor for "unnatural acts," whilst Bosie jaunted about on the continent, along with the hundreds of other homosexual men who were forced to leave England as a result of his actions. Now that's evil, Friends. He suffered no repercussions for his actions, and Oscar, besotted fool that he was, eventually went back to him after his release from prison. I suppose he didn't have much left, and, after all, Lord Alfred was very pretty. And we all know, Pretty and Evil is a winning combination.
