What a tormented monster Ralph can be! Though we've
placed his riveting turn as Amon Goeth, the sadistic
Nazi death camp officer in Schindler's List, in the "Too Creepy to Joke
About" section, another fabulous bad guy role of his
makes a splash on our Hot Bad Guy list, from Red Dragon. Poor
Francis... abused by his mom and alienated from the
social world around him, turns to building his muscles
and trans-incarnating as the "red dragon" of Robert
Blake fame. Sadly for his victims, Francis's red
dragon incarnation likes to murder people viciously,
but as we all know from the original belle et
bete story, even the most savage beast can be
tamed by the love of a good woman.
And let's face it. Ralph is not hard to look at. Especially when he works out. Except for those scary teeth. [Shudder] Anyway, I was rooting for him and Reba (played by Emily Watson). There's something primal about the idea of a woman who can open a savage mind to the possibilities of civility. I like to imagine an alternate ending in which Reba and Francis run off together and he forgets all about that silly murder stuff and concentrates on perfecting his pecs and abs for Reba's delectation.
