Sean Bean
Sean Bean has played numerous Villainous Roles, far too many to mention
individually. Two of his most memorable were as a terrorist in Patriot Games
and as a British Agent Gone Bad against Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye. While up
against Harrison Ford, a Yes He's Hot, But Is He Bad Tragedy Case, he actually
earned a real scar under his right eye. Cool. And the longish hair and black
leather added just the Hint of Villainy that we're looking for. He didn't have a
huge part in Goldeneye and at the beginning of the movie he was actually (shudder)
a Good Guy, but the whole end fight sequence on the giant satellite dish was way nifty.
It also proved, to us anyway, that Good Cheats. At least Evil is Honest and admits it.
Mr. Bean also played a Super Bad Guy in the BBC drama, Clarissa, in which he played Lovelace, an 18th Century rapist and all-around rogue. He wears hose. We have not seen this movie. We need to see this movie. It isn't available in the U.S., so if you have any way of getting us a copy, please let us know. We'll be your Best Friends for Life, as you will have provided us with More Hot Bad Guyness.
And how could we leave out Boromir in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, you may ask? Simple. Possession by Evil does not a Hot Bad Guy make. Yes, he was Hot. Yes, he was a Guy. (Or so we believe. Middle Earth was kind of strange.) Wanting the One Ring in order to help his people, not realizing that possession thereof would result in service to Ultimate Evil? No way. That's like blaming the kid in The Exorcist. So, too bad. www.hotgoodguys.com may still be available.
Update! After watching Clarissa (how we managed to get a copy is remaining confidential, since it skirted the bounds of legality, so let's just leave it at that), I have to say that Sean Bean as Robert Lovelace is even Hotter and Badder than we previously thought. Dear God, was he HOT. He wore hose and a series of smashing waistcoats. Some of the coats were even shiny. And he was so Unimaginably EVIL. He plotted, he planned, and he took on the task of destroying the title character's reputation (and in the 1700's reputation was pretty much all a woman had to offer) for the Fun of It. In the first five minutes of the movie, we learn that Lovelace has "an army of whores and bastards." That would be some scary army. And even up through the last minute, he revels in his Evilness, not thinking that he's done anything wrong at all. Was his Evilness increased by the fact that during the process of ruining Clarissa Harlowe I suspect he fell in love with her, thus wanting to destroy her all the more because she created a weakness in him? That's for the viewer to decide. But wow, was he ever Hot and Bad in this role, a couple of questionable disguises aside. The fact that he stood out so dramatically from a cast entirely made up of Villains (except, of course, Clarissa herself), makes his Badness that much more impressive. Thank You to the BBC for allowing us to watch it.

(after seeing Clarissa, it couldn't be anything less than the maximum)
